Cast Iron Pipe Repair: When Repair Beats Replacement

Cast iron can be spot-repaired when the defect is isolated and the surrounding pipe still has wall thickness. When a line has channelled along its length, has multiple failures, or sits under a slab where access is the main cost, repairing one section usually buys a short delay rather than a fix.

Not every failing cast iron line needs to come out. Whether repair is a reasonable answer depends on how the pipe is failing, and cast iron fails in a specific way that makes the question harder than it is for PVC.

How cast iron fails

Corrosion works from both sides. Inside, sewage generates hydrogen sulfide, which bacteria convert to sulfuric acid at the pipe crown; that acid eats the top of the pipe. Outside, damp soil corrodes the wall inward. In South Florida the outside half is aggressive — high water table, sandy fill, and ground that never dries out for a season.

The consequence is that a failing cast iron line rarely has one defect. It thins along its length and then loses its bottom where flow is heaviest, a pattern the trade calls channelling. A camera shows a trough instead of a round bore.

That is the crux of the repair-or-replace decision. A single crack in otherwise sound pipe is a repair. A channelled run with one bad section is a replacement with an obvious starting point.

The last row is where most Broward decisions actually land. When getting to the pipe is the expensive part, doing one section and re-opening the same floor in three years costs more than doing the run once.

Rust is not a diagnosis

An old cast iron line looks dramatic on camera — dark, rough, heavily scaled — and it is easy to read that as terminal. It frequently is not. Surface corrosion is the expected condition of a fifty-year-old line and does not by itself indicate lost wall.

A plumber assessing exactly this kind of footage separated the two cleanly: “Looks like a sag in the line between 15’ and 34’. Or it may be very flat and needs to be flushed and jetted. I didn’t see any cracks, offsets, or root intrusion.” That is an old, ugly pipe being reported as structurally serviceable with one specific concern.

If a quote for full replacement rests on the pipe looking rusty rather than on a named, located defect, that is the point to ask for the footage and a second read.

The repair options, from least to most invasive

  • Spot repair by excavation — cut out the failed section, couple in new pipe to code. Straightforward on a yard run, disruptive under a slab.
  • Sectional lining — a short cured liner across a defect, without opening the ground. Requires the surrounding pipe to hold shape and grade.
  • Full-length lining — a continuous liner through the run, which seals every joint it covers and is the usual answer for a pipe that is corroded but geometrically sound.
  • Pipe bursting — replaces the pipe entirely through access pits. Florida code requires HDPE, SDR 17, ASTM F714 and a video camera survey of the completed section.
  • Open-trench replacement — the default when grade has to change, or when the line has collapsed.

What goes back in is set by code. Florida’s Building Code lists ABS, cast iron, copper or copper-alloy, PVC and PP as conforming for building sewers on filled or unstable ground — the clause that applies across most of Broward — and permits PVC DWV in SDR26, SDR35, SDR41, PS50 or PS100, making SDR 35 an approved residential spec.

The timing question

The Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute puts cast iron’s service life at 50 to 75 years; South Florida practice puts it nearer 40 to 50. A Florida house built before about 1975 is inside that window, and roughly 35% of South Florida living units built in the 1960s and 1970s went in with cast iron.

A Florida homeowner framed the resulting dilemma in a thread about older homes: “Is everyone rushing to repair before things break or are you waiting for issues to arise?” Both answers are defensible. What is not defensible is deciding either way without footage, since the same 1968 house on the same street can be a decade apart from its neighbour in actual pipe condition.

Frequently asked questions

Should I replace my cast iron pipes now, or wait until they actually fail?

There is no universal answer, but the two paths are not equal. A planned replacement is scheduled, competitively quoted, and done with dry floors. An emergency one follows a backup and adds remediation. In Florida a third factor applies: carriers examine original plumbing at renewal.

What does a sewer camera inspection actually show?

It names a defect and locates it. The vocabulary is specific: belly or sag, offset joint, crack, root intrusion, channelling, scale, collapse. A surface locator marks the position and depth on the ground. Rust and scale alone on old cast iron are expected, not a verdict.

Should cast iron drain pipes be replaced?

Not automatically. Surface rust and scale are the expected condition of fifty-year-old cast iron and are not a verdict. Replacement is indicated by a named defect: channelling across multiple sections, a belly, an offset, or a collapse. A single crack in sound pipe is repairable.
